Working Conditions For An Aviation Firefighter

We will advise what the current guidelines are and how they will affect each stage of the recruitment process. If you are selected, you will receive 15 weeks of intensive training at our Melbourne Training Center prior to placement at your home fire station.
If you are successful in obtaining a position, we will contact you prior to the commencement of your course with relevant information to prepare you for your first day and for your training. If you are successful in being offered a position as an Aviation Rescue Fire Fighter in a specific location, you will be notified at least five to six weeks in advance of your employment and training course commencing, in order to provide you with sufficient time to undergo
the necessary Security Check, a medical assessment based on a CASA Class II (2) and meet any other pre-employment requirements. * Full-Time experience equals an average combined 38 hours working week over a twelve month period (any combination of paid work, volunteer work and/or sports representation) and should be able to be verified by details in application (CV and application) as
well as through referees and any other verification that Airservices may wish to seek. Please also refer to FAQs which provide details on specific evidentiary requirements (for example, completion of schooling evidence) which must be provided as part of your application submission.

Aviation firefighters fight fires in aircraft and buildings at airports, provide rescue and first-aid services for aircraft passengers and crew, provide technical advice about fire safety and assist in educating airport users about firefighting and safety.

For safety reasons, contact lenses or standard prescription glasses are not permitted during emergency responses or training simulations. Airservices will order specially made prescription glasses for you to wear whilst you complete any training and any emergency responses requiring you to wear a face mask.

The majority of aviation firefighters in Australia are employed by Airservices Australia in the Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) service. Shiftwork is compulsory. At many locations, the ARFF service operates 24 hours per day. However, at smaller locations the service may be provided for fewer hours.
The length of individual shifts varies between 10 and 16 hours, depending on the requirements of the location, with shifts organized around a rotating roster. Due to CASA regulations, if you are color-blind to a certain standard, this WILL preclude you from working as an aviation rescue firefighter with Airservices.
